Lamar reviews - Ocean's 8

June 15, 2018

It’s been over 10 years since Ocean’s 13 so hopefully people have forgotten that one that tried to milk the last few dollars of the Ocean franchise.  The bad news is the plot and storyline of this one is not much better.  The good news is the cast is not only much easier on the eyes it’s filled with award winning actors.  The 8 main cast has 4 Oscars, 2 Emmys, nine Grammys, six Golden Globes, 5 BAFTAs, and 10 SAGs.  Make no mistake these are heavy hitters.

Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean.  Cate Blanchett plays her partner Lou, Anne Hathaway plays famous actress Daphne Kluger.  Sarah Paulson plays Tammy a fence Awkwafina plays pickpocket Constance.  Rihanna plays computer wizard Nine Ball.  Helena Bonham Carter plays Rose a fashion designer.  And the jewel expert Amita is played by Mindy Kaling.  Elliot Gould brings back the Reuben character from the other movies.

There was also quite a few cameos as the heist was set at a huge gala.  Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Serena Williams, Common, Katie Holmes, Tommy Hilfiger, Oliva Munn, and probably 15 or so more.

The storyline is simple.  Debbie Ocean was framed and went to prison.  The movies opens with her talking to the parole board.  When she gets out she meets up with old partner Lou and lays out the perfect heist she has been planning while in jail.  They recruit the team and set out to steal a $150 million dollar necklace that Ann Hathaway’s character will be wearing to the gala.

The movie is fast paced and of course it’s cool to watch them get all the team together one at a time.  Debbie’s brother Danny, played by George Clooney is now dead.  This job is dedicated to him.  The good news is everybody does a great job and it’s fun to watch.  The not so good news is we are going over very familiar territory so it’s hard to surprise us.  The biggest thing missing for me was any real conflict on the team and tension about the heist.

110 minutes, Rated PG-13 for language, and drug use.

This one was release on the 11th anniversary of Ocean’s 13.  One of the greatest things I read about this movie is the actress whose name I will not mention was offered a role but had to turn it down because of scheduling.

A few of the actors didn’t get a chance to shine, especially Mindy Kaling.  She is hilarious and didn’t get to really show it.  Two things really stand out in the movie.  Anne Hathaway actually steals every scene she’s in as the self-absorbed actress.  And they cast James Corden as the insurance investigator.  He was awesome.

The movie was very fun to watch even with the few things that I mentioned.  It’s worth taking the time to watch if for no other reason than the Steller cast.

My Score: 3 Budweisers
