Tomb Raider

This the movie that last year’s The Mummy starring Tom Cruise wanted to be instead of the ridiculous waste of time it turned out to be.  Instead of trying to take a bunch of separate storylines and tie them together to build a movie franchise like The Mummy, Tomb Raider keeps it simple.  Take an Oscar winning actress put her in a movie based on a once hugely popular video game, have a simple plot with one storyline, let all the action take place in an exotic location, throw in a convincing bad guy, turn up the CGI and have at it. Which is exactly what The Mummy failed to do.

The movie stars Oscar winning actress Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.  In case you don’t know Lara Croft is the name of the main character in the video game Tomb Raider.  This is a reboot of the 2001 and 2003 movies Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life starring Angelina Jolie.  Neither of which were very good movies.  Lara’s father Richard Croft, played by Dominic West has died and has left his vast fortune to his daughter Lara.  Lara chooses to be poor rather than sign the papers that would give her that fortune because it would mean she’s acknowledging that her father is dead.  Eventually to avoid losing the estate she grew up on she has to sign.  In doing so she receives a clue from her father about some secret stuff he has been working on.  It seems he had a whole other life she had no idea about.  He makes a request but instead of following it she is determined to find out what happened to him and how he died.  Her search for answers lands her in the middle of plot that could destroy the entire population of the world and it’s up to her to stop it.

The movie is right at 2 hours but doesn’t seem that long, Rated PG-13 for action violence and some language.

Having an action movie starring a woman is no longer noteworthy.  We have Wonder Woman of course, The Hunger Games, The new Star Wars, Atomic Blonde, and many more.  This, on just the action, man or woman was a really fun movie.

In just one sequence Lara with her hands tied escapes under gunfire, falls off a cliff, and right before going over a waterfall manages to grab a rusted metal bar on a wrecked plane and drag herself onto the wing which precedes to break.  She jumps into the cock pit as the plane starts to go over the falls, 4 other things transpire before she comes crashing to ground to fight her way out of being captured.  And that’s just 5 minutes.

I saw a behinds the scene video of Vikander doing her own stunts and it was really impressive.

Is this movie going to change the world? No.  Will you be talking about it a month from now? No.  Will you forget your troubles for 2 hours and have a good time watching it?  Absolutely.

My Score: 4 Ice Cold Budweisers
